“Another really good class”
An update on the group exercise study taking place in Ayrshire

The study taking place at the Galleon Leisure Centre, Kilmarnock and the Magnum Centre, Irvine which is looking at the effects of 12 weeks of group exercise classes for people moderately affected with MS is underway. The study will compare people with MS who take part in the classes with people not taking part in the class. All participants will be followed for one-year and any changes related to balance, depression, fatigue, mobility, quality of life and strength will be recorded.

Classes have begun at the Galleon Leisure Centre under the guidance of members of East Ayrshire’s Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) leisure staff, and the main researcher Yvonne Learmonth, a physiotherapist and PhD student at Glasgow University. Similar classes are planned to start at the Magnum Centre later in the summer.

Current participants, all of whom have MS and are known to the Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Unit in Irvine, have reported enjoying the classes and are already expressing some improvements.

Recent comments from the current participants include:

“I am doing things that I haven’t done in years, standing on one leg and walking more”

“I am pretty tired, I had a busy day yesterday, but once we get started I know the exercises will make me feel better)”

“That was another really good class, it’s hard work but really enjoyable”

At the end of the twelve weeks all study participants will be invited by the CHIP team to continue, or in the case of the control participants, begin exercising at leisure services within the community. Some of the current class participants are already planning what they would like to do.

“We could try the aquafit class, which seems good. Once this is finished we should give that a go”

Recruitment for the class at the Magnum Centre has begun and those who have moderate MS symptoms and who are thought to be suitable by staff at the Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Unit have been sent an invitation letter to take part in the study.

Please note this is a press release for information only, and does not form an invitation to take part in the study. However if you would like further details please contact Yvonne Learmonth on 0141 330 4053 or y.learmonth.1@research.gla.ac.uk
